The Grateful Dead in 1970: The Fillmore East And West And The Other Ones   1 comment

The Fillmore West (Left) and The Fillmore East (Right) back in the Days

The what and the why of this listing:

I have written several blogs about individual Grateful Dead shows in the 1970.  They can be found here.  A hyperlist list of all 1970 concerts can be found here. All of my Grateful Dead blogs can be found here.  I have never been attracted to the approach of locating the ‘best’ concert or the ‘best’ version of a particular Dead song.  We all have our favorites. I often find myself playing a particular set of 1970 Grateful Dead concerts when I am the mode for Grateful Dead 1.0 (the Pigpen era).  The Dead released two commercial albums during 1970 and Dead.Net has released at least six concert from this year alone. This is a very rich year for The Dead.  The drums are kicking, Pig Pen’s organ is grinding, Bobby has finally learned how to play the guitar… There are a boat load of excellent concerts to listen to  free on the Internet Archive even after those which are no longer available because they have been commercially released by Dead.Net. The concerts selected here are limited small San Francisco area venues (the exceptions are the Fillmore East & The Winterland).  The listings here are of all Sound Board records.  The best of these, IMHO, are the Fillmore shows (East and West) and the Winterland shows.  For completeness I have included shows at the Matrix, The Euphoria Ballroom and at the Family Dog.  There are several audience recording patches of individual songs and parts of song among several of the shows.

The Winterland In the 1970’s (Grateful Dead 2.0 on stage).

Why 1970 (and not 1969 or 1971)?

This is a great year for Dead version 1.0, they are capable of playing as a tight ensemble with a funk and bluesy feel.  The psychedelic excesses of 1968 are (mostly) in the past and the power stadium rock band (Dead version 2.0 with the Godchaux’s ) is still in the future.  The band presents a warm mix of (what was to become) folk-rock and funk based blues (The versions of Turn on Your Love Light played here could last over 25 minutes where often used as a second set closer).  The jams feature great interactions between Jerry, Bobby and PigPen with a driven rhythm section of base and drums. And frankly these shows are what I have been listening to over the last few weeks.

Why Small California Halls?

The band often played their most intimate sets in small halls which were close to home.  Indeed the Fillmore West was a second home, The Matrix was a small club attached to the Fillmore West, The Euphoria was right around the corner from their practice space in San Rafael, The Winterland, although much larger, was also a San Francisco club and also a Phil Graham venue.  The Family Dog (on the Great Highway) was at one point owned by the Grateful Dead. The Fillmore East is obviously not a San Francisco club but the Dead have been playing there since 196X and it was also a Phil Graham venue.  “There’s not place like home, Auntie ‘Em”.  By listening to small venues over the year one can build up a better appreciation of how the Dead developed thematically during this crucial year.

Aren’t There Some Bad nights and poor sound board records in this Listing?

Yes, indeed.  But not among the Fillmore and Winterland shows.  But the great shows didn’t just happen.  Think of the Euphoria and the Matrix sets as live rehersals in battle conditions and The Family Dog is, well, the Family Dog.

The Grateful Dead at the Fillmore West, June 1970 : New Speedway Boogie   3 comments

This is the second of three blog posts on the Grateful Dead at the Fillmore West, 1969, 1970 and 1971.

Now I don’t know but I been told
in the heat of the sun a man died of cold
Do we keep on coming or stand and wait
with the sun so dark and the hour so late?

What a difference a year makes.  In June, 1969 the Dead preformed a monumental four night run at the Fillmore where they preformed as leader of a tribe of loyal psychedelic followers. Reality hit pretty heavy in 1969:

August 6, 1969 Manson Cult Murders

August 8, 1969 Hippy goes main$tream with Wood$tock  (Dead has equipment troubles and trouble connecting with the mass audience at same)

December 6, 1969 Altamont Speedway Concert/ Murder

December 31, 1969 American  annual combat deaths in Vietnam  reaches  11,616, Total combat deaths for the War reaches 47,000.  Vietnamese death toll is unknown but is thought to approach 1,000,000.

January, 1970 19 members of the Grateful Dead are bust for  illegal possession  after a concert in New Orleans.  Included in the bust was Owsley Stanley (aka The Bear).  This bust effectively ended The Bears involvement with the band as sound engineer and chemist.

May 4, 1970 At Kent State four students are murdered by panicked National Guardsmen during an anti-War protest.  Massive national anti-war protests begin.  (Neil Young writes and CSN&Y record ‘Ohio’ which is in stores in 2 and half weeks after the event).

I don’t know but I been told
if the horse don’t pull you got to carry the load
I don’t know whose back’s that strong
Maybe find out before too long

One way or another
this darkness got to give

Along the way Jerry records what is perhaps his best known mainstream riff – the petal steel guitar intro on Teach Your Children Well on CSN&Y’s mega album Deja vu (probably recorded in November, 1969). The slender  Workingman’s Dead (8 tracks)  was recorded in February, 1970 (released June 14, 1970)

New Speedway Boogie 1970-07-03

The Fillmore shows on June 05 and June 07 are both broken into two parts: separate  acoustic and electric sets.  The June 06 set was all electric.  The June 04 show is captured on two fragmentary recordings, parts of an acoustic set here and parts of the electric closer set here.

The June 05 set features fine versions of Friend of the Devil, Black Peter and New Speedway Boogie.  The electric set has a super smooth version of It’s a Man’s World with Jerry in fine form as the grandson of soul and Pig Pen is well Pig Pen.  Some don’t like the version of Uncle John’s Band here, but compared to some of the live recordings from the 1980’s this is a great Uncle John.  Cryptical Envelopment/Drums/The Other One fails to catch fire and St. Stephen just seems out of place.   All in all a Nice and Professional set,  but it is clearly no longer the summer of love or even the summer of 1969.   The Grateful Dead, like the rest of America’s under thirty set seems to have taken a deep breath and said: “What’s Next?” Or as the kids would say today: WTF.

The June 06 set is stronger and points to the future Dead. China Cat Sunflower and (the much older) I Know You Rider are joined together at last and Jerry packages his guitar work here in a much more traditional Rock context and adds those famous closing barr chords to the the of I Know You Rider that say: Wake Up!  Good Lovin is given a nice frame and the band is there, the song will not  maturity until Bob takes over all the lead singing in 1973.  Not Fade Away makes a short appearance within LoveLight and will become much more Bo Diddily form in the near future.

The June 07 performance still goes on giving after all these years.  A technically near perfectly  performed acoustical set which opens with Don’t Ease Me In (which will become a Dead staple and often a first set closer).  New Rider friends are present on stage for a near clean Friend of the Devil / Cold Jordan / Swing Low Sweet Chariot followed by a great triple play Cumberland Blues / Me and My Uncle / New Speedway Boogie. The second (electric) set includes an amazing sequence of Cryptical Envelopment/ drums/The Other One/jam(1)/drums/jam(2)/Sugar Magnolia!!! (you should listen to these tracks right now)  then the band returns to its R&B roots with a  strong This Is a Man’s World followed a strong but out of sequence Mama Tried. Cosmic Charlie sounds out of place here and Good Lovin returns to close the second set.  [Historical Note: on track 12 an audience member can clearly be heard for the Youth International Party (YIPPIE) haranguing the audience to “get off our fucking asses and act to stop the war right now”. They also seem to attempt to take the stage during The Other One. Also during The Other One you can here some really strange chanting from an audience member around the 3:00 mark til the end of the track. ]

The Grateful Dead: Dancin’ In The Street Part I (1970-04-15)   Leave a comment

This was Pigpen’s night at the Winterland.   Pigpen IS James Brown on It’s a Man’s World and Jerry sounds like two separate guitarist on his two breaks during this song. wOw.  The set closes with

Dancin’ In the Street (featuring Bob & Pigpen)

[Compare this version with the 1978-04-10 Bob and Godchaux version (Listen).]

Followed by the massive Pig Pen production:

Turn On Your Love Light –> Not Fade Away –> Not Fade Away.

Motown a go go.

According to those in the know this was some kinda night for the SF sound at its finest. Quicksilver Messenger Service opened followed by the Jefferson Airplane and then the Dead blow the place apart.

The Grateful Dead Concert Tapes On The Internet Archive

The Internet Archive’s Grateful Dead is a great collection of concert tapes. There are over 2,000 unique concerts. There are multiple recordings of most concerts. This series attempts to provide a simple interface to this collection by selecting one recording for each concert on a given date. Preference is given to tapes processed by the great Charlie Miller and sound board tapes. Not all shows are well recorded but the there are great moments here. Dig in and enjoy! You didn’t have to be there. Good Luck.

The Grateful Dead In The 1970 – From The Hippie Cowboys of 1970 to the Jazz Age

While the core Grateful Dead members (Garcia, Weir, Lesh & Kreutzmann) remain members through out the 1970’s there were several changes in the band line up during this time.  PigPen left the band in ill health in 1972. Keith Godchaux joined that same year on key boards (primarily on a concert Grand piano but also on a Hammond B3 organ).  His wife Donna joined as a vocalist that same year.  Both of the Gordchaux’s left the band in Febuary, 1979.   Brent Mydland joined the band as a key board player and vocalist in April 1979).  Micky Hart (whose father controversially manager the band for a while) left the band under a cloud in 1971 but later rejoined in 1974.  This decade began with  signature songs such as Truckin’, Me & My Uncle and Jack Straw.  The Grateful Dead Movie (filmd in 1974) solidified the band’s image in the public mind.  Later in the decade the band sound changed considerably.  The massive Scarlet Begonias –> Fire On The Mountain –> Estimated Prophet was perfected on stage and redefined the band.  The colorful marital discord and unhealthy lifestyle choices of the Godchaux (and Jerry and Bob’s search for a different (more electric and funk oriented) keyboard sound lead to the Godchaux leaving the band and Brent Mydland  joining the band in 1979.
