Grateful Dead: 1991-05-04: Eine kleine Nachtmusik   Leave a comment

It starts out as a not great recording of a not great night of the post Brent Grateful Dead.  Then, as it some times does, during the second set the magic hits Jerry during Crazy Fingers.  The vocals have a timeless blues feel and the solo is out of this world (with parts of ‘Spanish Jam’ showing up). You can hear the band pick up Jerry’s vibe.  Vince’s keyboards start to rock and we are off and running seamlessly into great versions of Playin’ in the Band and Uncle John’s Band.  After the Drums and Space thingy a rocking I Need a Miracle and and Jerry is outstanding on Standing On the Moon.  Not two hours of bliss but these five songs show how the post 1990 could cook even without Bruce.  When Jerry is there, he is there.

Grateful Dead 1973-03-16 Playin’ In the Band   Leave a comment

Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum is such an ugly place.

Why is this such a classic ‘73 set?  Who can say?  Looking over the history of the Dead as revealed in the Internet Archives Grateful Dead collection of concert tapes, there are a lot of great March concerts by this band over a lot of years. This concert is just BEFORE the wall of sound system (that was 1973-03-23). There are some rough spots in the concert and some bad vocals but at its core is a great 20 minute performance of Playin In the Band and a (so so imho ) Dark Star Plus:   China Cat SunFlower –> I Know You Rider, Jack Straw and “Wave the Flag (soon to renamed US Blues), a hot Truckin (with some rough vocals)  and Bob’s your uncle.
